New Highrise For Adelaide

Proposals have been put forward for what could well become South Australia's most iconic building in Adelaide.

Rising 123 metres or 31floors, spanning 40 metres in width and with a price tag of an estimated $100 million, the all glass building would be one of the biggest office developments in the city.

Planned for the heart of Adelaide's Central Business District, features for the tower include a 25m swimming pool, gymnasium, 180 parking spaces and a ground floor café accessible by the public. The project will have 31,000 square metres of office space, enough to allow for 3000 workers who will travel to their offices via external glass elevators which will be visible to the outside world.

Designed by Tectvs, a Southern Australian architecture company, the building achieves what seems to be have been the main criteria for design and clearly is not yet another stereotypical box like tower.

More sculpture than building in appearance, the tower is partially reminiscent of a stylish, slim line games console or entertainment centre, whilst the southern side of the tower which will face onto Currie Street will have a prominent cantilevered facade that if it wasn't for such trifling matters as gravity could make a good beginners skate ramp.

This will without doubt become the tower's defining point and could well put Adelaide on the international architectural map. Australian skyscrapers, and indeed entire skylines, are traditionally conservative with a small "c" in the mould of a typical American city rather than showing off the emerging flair of places like London or Dubai so the proposals for Currie Street break the traditional mould.

And although without a doubt it will beat Santos House on aesthetics almost sadly, due to airspace restrictions it will not be able to beat it in the height stakes with Santos House standing at 137 metres high.

The plans having been lodged with the City Councils Planning Department have yet to go through to the Civil Aviation Authority for comment and hopes are for the plans to be before the Development Assessment Department by July.

Construction will take approximately 2 -3 years but it has been stated that this would not take place until a key tenant can be confirmed for the space so it could be a while before ground breaking can begin.
